"Judge Brady Administering the Presidential Oath of Office to Vice President Chester A. Arthur on September 20th, 1881"

I am working on a book about American history and find odd moments like this the most interesting. President Garfiend was shot. He lingered a while before he died, giving everyone a chance to build up a worry about the Vice President. Here he is being sworn in. Nobody wanted him to be president, not even himself. There was a strong rumour that he was born in Canada, which would have let him off. In the end he was one of the more independent spirits who occupied that office and did some good things. But nobody ever liked him. He was not renominated and died in what would have been his second term. |
