"She Swings Her Bolas"
|
The BOLAS is a weapon of the Patagonian cowboys, two balls held together by a strong cord. This girl has cut her bolas cord in the middle, so has two bolases, or one bolas twice. Everything with her is two steps from where it started - she's that sort of girl. She is far from the Pampas, in the Parc Jourdan, Aix-en-Provence, France, the city where in Cezanne's day men with pipes used to play cards slowly. I was present one sunny afternoon in the early 21st century when a group of young men and women were practising with the bolas, swinging, exercising, humming the air with sensual provocative gestures to which the bolas immediately responded. It seemed like the preliminary act of some vast revolution, to free every last one of us from all that fetters us, and the symbol on our flag of freedom forevermore would be: this young woman swinging a bolas, or two bolases, three steps from where anything started, because she's that sort of girl and now we are all a little more like her, revolution or not. |
