The New Cable Car

Recently in the Pyrenean mountain town of Ax-les-Thermes, the great transforming project of building a cable car began, linking the town with the ski station at Bonascre. Throughout October to December 2002, I made drawings of its progress day by day, recording its effects and its participants.

Now it is open and working, its slow silent procession up and down the mountain a constant backdrop to the lives of people in villages for miles around. As the fascination of its newness fades, the mountainside recovers from the construction, and it is absorbed into the human life of the town.

Récemment dans la petite ville d'Ax-les-Thermes on vit le commencement du grand projet transformant pour construire une télécabine pour relier la ville d'Ax avec la station de ski à Bonascre. Durant tous les mois d'Octobre à Décembre 2002, j'ai dessiné les progrès des travaux jour après jour, enregistrant dans mes dessins les effets et les participants.

Actuellement, la nouvelle télécabine est achevée et opérationnelle, et sa défilé silencieux sert d'une toile de fond pour la ville quotidienne des tous les villages aux alentours. Alors que passe la nouveautéfascinante, le flanc de montagne se remet de la construction et la télécabine devient intégré dans la vie humaine d'ici.
