"A Lifelong Unfortunate Visiting Cezanne's Garden"
|
Paul Cezanne lived his life in Aix-en-Provence. Almost 100 years after his death his studio remains. For me visiting it was an important moment. When I was a kid I saw an exhibition of Cezanne's watercolours in the north of England and learned more in a few minutes about life, vision and possibilities than I have ever learned since. So what of our friend here? He wanders in Cezanne's garden, confused in the same location where Cezanne was not. The restful atmosphere has not entered into him. The drawing is testament to the permanence of his confusion and to the existence of an unavailable clarity, even though the light is clear and the day perfect for others. |
