This is the first linocut I ever made. My parents' house had recently burned down and I was living in a cottage in Ogle, Northumberland, with my Japanese dog, Pugsley. I bought some lino and a set of cutting blades in Thornes Artshop in Newcastle. I sat on the floor of the barn and made this portrait. I draw and make cuts like the Inuit artists - sitting on the ground. I have always worked in this way.

Only a few prints were taken at the time. A full edition was printed at the Mongoosier Than Thou press twenty years later.
