The Holy Man And The Funfair

The holy man lived in his hollow behind the waterfall for twenty years and would be there yet if the flood had not filled his hollow and slooshed him away through the mountains.

He lifted his face from the water in a half submerged funfair in the middle of a temporary sea. So he climbed the helter-skelter to its top and waited there for the flood to recede. When it did he walked the muddy field, snooped into the booths and haunted the games and rides, always expecting the funfair people to return at any moment. But they did not.

The holy man lived in the funfair for thirty years, hoping at first for a new flood to carry him home. Growing very ancient, he cleaned the rides, oiled the gears, sat in the high doorway of the helter-skelter watching wildness return to fill the encircling fields. Then one day people came - they did not say who they were - and shooed him away.
