I grew up in the wilds of Northumberland.  There always seemed to be a molecatcher about.  The dead moles were hooked onto a wire fence in a grisly display.  Not as a warning to other moles, but advertising what a good molecatcher he was.  If moles tell each other bedtime stories in their burrows, the mention of the molecatcher must elicit the most anxious squeaks.
