The Northern Lights is one of the great sights available to us Earthlings. My grandfather did not think that the stars were faraway suns. Instead, he believed they were chinks of light showing through from Heaven - an explanation his priest in Ireland gave him when he was a boy and which he never questioned in a long life. I do not know how he would have fitted the Northern Lights into this cosmology. He never saw them.
When I stand on an icy mountain and see the Northern Lights ribboned above me, it makes me love the world more, all the while having no thoughts of or hopes for Heaven. The lights are enough.
