I have drawn many pictures of Punch and Judy, not to mention crocodiles, who are likely to snap up anytime, anywhere in my work. The first Punch and Judy I ever saw was on a bright summer day 1960 when I was four years old. I lived in the village of Woolsington, near Newcastle airport in North-East England. I was playing alone by the river, catching frogs, when I heard a sound of Mr Punch's voice coming across the fields. I headed for it and eventually arrived at a green behind a pub. Tables of food were laid out everywhere. But there were no people. The Punch and Judy show was already in progress, Mr Punch in full flow, but without an audience. I sat down and became the audience. Soon others arrived, but I didn't notice them. I had discovered the theatre. I have been fascinated by Punch and Judy ever since.
