Long before Playstation there was the game of conkers. Your conker was threaded onto a string and you held it out for your opponent to hit with his conker on a string. It was an obsession with English schoolboys, me too, in the days when TV was still in black and white. Anyone who has held a freshly freed conker knows what a beautiful hopeful thing it is. These two conker brothers I picked up in the garden of Paul Cezanne in Aix-en-Provence, France. I was thinking of Cezanne's still lifes, but in a way I have of not thinking about what I am thinking about - hence the Scottie dog, a dark spirit crossing the stillness, breaking up the life.
